Feed the Monster: Part One

This interactive installation took place in the Dirt Palace window front in Providence, RI. The public fed the monster by placing items in the mouth that sat outside the window. Linsey Wallace wove these items into the monster, which hung inside the window. Joan sewed the background imagery. All the materials used in this project were recycled. The project took place during December 2006, culminating in a performance by the two artists.

Plans change. This year's Progressive Runway Project was detourned by rain and kickball. The lettrist's aspect of the event was dropped, but no enthusiam was lost. The fashions were shown off in a tournement between the New Urbanists and the Psychogeographers. Kickball Jesus has asked for the fashion project to return for the 2007 Provflux Kickball game. The Progressive Runway Project has been an exciting trash-fashion event in Providence the past two years. In May 2004 the project marched through the arched corridors of the Providence Place Mall in clothing made from recycled materials. Last year the project engaged the city streets on wheels with trash-fashion made for biking.

The Lettrist movement began in 1942 by a group of artists who wrote poems about their contemporary culture on their clothes. Lettrism now appears all over the fashion world through various brand name slogans. The Progressive Runway Project III will focus on bringing Lettrism back into the hands of the individual.

Participatory runway shows will occur @ 4 Providence hotspots on June 3rd, 2006. The goal of this year’s Progressive Runway Project III is to create a dialogue of our eclectic Providence community.

Participate:
-create and/or wear recycled and lettrist clothing
-document any part of the project with photography, film, sound, or writing
-donate old t-shirts and supplies for writing on fabric
-spread the word

The Progressive Runway Project II A RIOTS Production: Friday 5.27.2005

Last May over fifty models, designers, and documenters participated the first Progressive Runway Project by marching through the arched corridors of the Providence Place Mall in clothing made from recycled materials. The Runway Project engaged the mall allowing patrons to view and question this consumer environment in new ways. Fun, excitement, and security followed the performance from beginning to end.

This year, the project will promote sustainability by making fashion more coherent with biking. This intervention will be fun and exciting for the participants in the project as well as Providence city-goers. With innovative design and action we can use fashion to make exploration and bicycle transportation trendy in Providence.

MODELS:
Be on the front line of fashion by traversing downtown Providence in trash haute couture. As a part of this bicycle runway, models will prove that fashion, function, and waste should always be combined.

PHOTOGRAPHERS:
Documenters will need to be creative because this fashion intervention takes place on two wheels…and there will be disregard for one way streets. Models will be riding at a slow pace but will traverse most of downtown. Be a part of the documenting crew and help organize the best way to record this event.

DESIGNERS:
Artists will use trash and other recycled materials to create garments specifically designed for bicycle utility. Designers must consider body mobility, bicycle restrictions, and innovative elements that may make cycling easier.

This highly planned experiment was meant to expose the amount of waste from the galleries on Providence’s Gallery Night. We stopped at The RISD Museum, The Providence Art Club, RISD Works, The Arcade, Exposed, AS220, and Sol Koffler. Hardly any of us had trash in our pants after the gallery stops. From an environmental point of view, this was a good thing; but from an artist’s perspective, this was a disappointment. The reason for the lack of trash was the lack of people in the galleries. Why isn’t the community taking advantage of this free, monthly exposure to the Providence Art scene? How can we change that? I think if we could include local music into Gallery Night, more people would get involved. What are your thoughts?

After the Sol Koffler Gallery, the group of nine split up, and infiltrated the city. The fashion show had no trash cans, so half of the group was used as mobile receptacles. The other half roamed the streets and walked through Kennedy Plaza, picking up litter and talking to passers-by. When I got back to the RISD ISB gallery, all the pants were filled. I piled the pants filled with waste in the corner, and went downtown again to celebrate. I was planning to hang the pants the next morning.

I got to the gallery at 9 am on 9-17-2004, and the pants were gone. They had been thrown away. I tried to get them from the compressor dumpster with the help of a RISD Custodian, but it had been emptied that morning. I was advised to put a note on the art work next time. I would have loved to see the filled pants hanging in the ISB Gallery Space, but the most important part of this project was to make the community think about waste. Overall, this act of public dissent was a success, even though it did not fold out as planned.

a RISD Green by Design Event Trash Haute Couture: Providence, RI

Nine models wearing trash bag pants will lead a fashion experiment during Providence's Gallery Night. The fashion tour will start promptly at 6:30 pm in the RISD ISB Gallery (Illusration Building), and will continue through many Providence galleries. The ISB Gallery will also be open Friday and Saturday, displaying the results of our trash fashion experiment.

RISD Museum: Sitings 2004

This piece consisted of a glass case and catalogue that replicate the museum's display of handcrafted ceramic vessels. The case contains vessels from the industrial shoreline of Narragansett Bay. Focusing on these mass-produced, deteriorating vessels alludes to the city's industrial history, while encouraging contemplation of the city's future.

a Psy-Geo Provflux event

28 models transformed the corridors of the Providence Place Mall into a guerrilla runway. The runway reached the third floor before being asked to leave. After being escorted out, the fashion show continued on the brick walkway in front of the State Capitol Building. Over 50 models, designers, and photographers collaborated to make this trash fashion event a success.
